Current situation

Viniculture

Istria has the following vineyard areas:

  • In 1885 - 35.000 hectares - Austrian - Istria
  • In 1947 - 12.700 hectares - today's Istrian Region
  • In 1991 - 7.600 hectares
  • In 2003 - 2.960 hectares - registered on the basis of the Law on Wine + 2.000 hectares of estimated unregistered production for private needs = 4.960 hectares total

The period of cost-efficient exploitation of a vineyard is 25 years (amortisation). The average age of planted vineyards in the Istrian Region is about twenty years (since 1994, following the action of the Istrian Region, 500 hectares of vineyards have been planted, which makes a total of 10% of the entire area covered with vineyards).

If we want to keep 5000 hectares of the vineyard at the level of simple reproduction, we should annually be planting 200 hectares of vineyards. On the basis of 4000 vines, it makes up a total of 800.000 pieces of vine grafts a year (value of 12.000.000 kuna).

Olive-growing

Istria had the following olive groves:

  • In 1900 - 1.000.000 trees - Austrian Istria
  • In 1991 - 350.000 productive trees
  • Between 1991- 2003 - 278.000 plants were planted through the Programme of the Istrian County
  • In 2003 - 600.000 trees (28.000 froze in 1996)

Istria is a bordering area for olive-growing, so that the quality if olive oil is very high on one hand, and on the other hand, olive trees frequently suffer low temperatures.

The high quality olive oil is not sufficiently exploited on the market. For this reason, the price of oil is relatively low. By the same token, there is the insufficiently developed processing industry, which would use all ingredients of olive trees (wood, leaves, fruits, etc)

Fruit-growing

Fruit-growing is less traditional in the production of our farmers, and the hazelnut trees that only until thirty years ago used to grow in every Istrian vineyard now almost completely disappeared.

Modern fruit-growing is slowly making its may in the sphere of production of many farmers in the Istrian Region.

Istria has the necessary conditions for growing peaches, cherries, pears, apples, plums, strawberries, and other fruit sorts.
