Project of Prevention of Drug Addiction by a Technique Known as ''Theatre of the Oppressed''

Theatre of the Opposed is an interactive and participation theatre imployed all over the world to help individuals become aware of their status in society and the world around them. This program enables them to improve their present situation in life. Theatre of the Opposed directs participants in a very subtle and thought-provoking way to contemplate and face their problem, viewing it from different aspects and finally becoming involved in their own positive decision-making. Forum Theatre is the central and most widely used technique of the Theatre of the Opposed and scenarios can be prepared with a limited number of students. These scenes are later performed before an audience who may also participate in problem-solving. Thus, students may express their opinions about a problem which they themselves may be experiencing and develop techniques to help them in their everyday life. Forum Theatre encourages individuals to strengthen their determination to carry out decisions. The scenarios help participants learn by experience. In a discussion forum which follows, participants may voice their own opinions. Theatre of the Opposed will be conducted during a 5-day workshop in schools within the Istrian County in each educational center (town). These workshops will be attended by students of the 7th and 8th grades of elementary schools and students of the 1st and 2nd years of high schools. From each school a few students will be chosen to participate in these workshops. The number of students chosen from each school will depend on the number of schools in each educational center. After every workshop, two forum theatre performances will be presented for students and professors. The workshops will be organized in the following educational centers: Pula, Labin, Pazin, Rovinj, Poreč, Buje and Umag.

Duration of Activities: September 20 to December 10, 2004.
