ICZM-MSP
Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)
The Adriatic coastal zone is an area of intense activity, an area of interchange within and between physical, biological, social, cultural and economic processes. Managing such complex systems requires an integrated approach capable of bringing together the multiple, interwoven, overlapping interests of the coastal area in a co-ordinated and rational manner, harnessing coastal resources for optimum social and economic benefit for present and future generations without prejudicing the resource base itself, and maintaining the ecological processes.
Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP)
The Sea is a complex ecosystem that does not recognize administrative boundaries. The activities sectors that exist on the coastal areas compete each other for that vital space, often threatening endangered and rare coastal and marine habitats. A holistic approach to coastal and marine area will mitigate these conflicts, and holistic results should be included in physical plans. Environmental aspects have to be integrated into MSP, also taking into account the underway implementation process of the Water Framework Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
